Van Buren County's District Court , designated as the 7th District Court, has exclusive jurisdiction over certain types of cases. In addition, the District Court is where all adult criminal proceedings begin regardless of the nature of the offense.
The 36th Circuit Court has original jurisdiction in all civil cases with claims of more than $25,000 and criminal cases where the offense is a felony or serious misdemeanor.
The Van Buren County Probate Court handles estate cases, files wills for safe keeping, processes name changes, hears petitions for hospitalization of mentally ill individuals, and assigns guardians and conservators.
The Van Buren Office of Community Corrections (OCC) works to limit state prison commitments for County offenders; prevents overcrowding at the Van Buren County Correctional Facility; and protect public safety by diverting low risk, non-violent felony offenders into rehabilitative programming.
Van Buren County specialty Courts include: Adult Recovery Court, Drug Treatment Court, Family Recovery Court, Family Reunification Court, Sobriety Court, Swift and Sure, and Veterans Court.
In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Van Buren County Courts seeks to ensure that qualified individuals with disabilities have equal and full access to the judicial system through implementation of a joint local administrative order.
Circuit Court Case Evaluation is an alternative dispute resolution process which requires that most civil cases be evaluated by a panel of three experienced attorney "evaluators" who review written and oral presentations and evaluate the monetary value of each case.
Pursuant to Van Buren County Court policy, Maintaining Bond Agency Lists (Policy 3.002), annual applications to be placed on our approved Bond Agency List are due by December 14, 2020.
