  • Animal Control handled a call in Bloomingdale Township involving a serious dog attack. The victim sustained serious injuries and will have a long road to recovery. The dog in question was owned by a friend in which they were taking care of it for them. The dog was confiscated while the process takes place through the court system.
  • Our office was able to develop suspects from the counterfeit $100 ring that was going on in our county roughly 1½ weeks ago. Interviews were conducted, and the investigation has a little more to go. After it’s completed, it’ll be sent over the prosecutor for review and charges.
  • Our Narcotic Unit attempted to arrest a subject on Parole for a Narcotics Investigation. The Parolee fled in a vehicle, almost hitting a Detective. A pursuit took place with several marked units that were in the area. The same individual fled from our office the day prior as well. The pursuit ended in Kalamazoo County and the two individuals bailed. It should be noted we called off the pursuit when we got into Kalamazoo County entering the busy areas. A Kalamazoo Deputy located the vehicle abandoned in a trailer park within a minute or two after we terminated the pursuit. A Western Canine tracked the suspects for several miles; however, they were not caught at the time. Currently, we are actively looking for them and the driver now has numerous felonies for his arrest.
  • Our Detectives worked in conjunction with the FBI and other Law Enforcement Offices in Washington to help locate a missing 14-year-old out of Washington. The child was recovered safe at a residence in South Haven Township. The 30-year-old that was behind it was taken into custody on numerous charges (9 Felonies). The family of the child flew to Michigan immediately to be reunited with her. She had been missing since the first week of January. Great work with everyone involved behind the scenes to get a resolution on this case. Our Office, FBI, and the VBC Prosecutors Office will be working in conjunction with authorities in Washington to bring a final resolution to this case for prosecution.
  • Uniform Response was involved in a pursuit with a stolen vehicle out of Kalamazoo County. Numerous other Law Enforcement Agencies got involved in the pursuit in the county. After several miles, the vehicle went into a field area and the driver bailed. The passenger stayed with the vehicle and was cooperative. Two Canines and a drone were deployed at the scene; however, the suspect driver wasn’t located after being sited and chased for quite some time. We were able to ID the driver and warrants are being issued. The victim of the stolen vehicle did come to the scene and drive their vehicle home.
  • Uniform Response took a Break-In at the Bloomingdale Bus Garage. Someone broke through the back door and made entry during the midnight hours. At this point, it doesn’t appear that anything was taken. Anyone with any information on it is asked to contact our office.
  • We had our Annual Jail Inspection this week which is performed by the MDOC State Inspector that regulates statutes for all the Correctional Facilities in the State. We get inspected on everything from fire alarms, medical treatment, health appraisals, use of force, etc. The inspection takes about a half a day, and we are evaluated on everything MDOC can regulate. The Inspector walks through every part of our facility, and we had ZERO VIOLATIONS and NOTHING OUT OF ORDER! The Inspector advised we were in the TOP 3 in the state for jails. As you can imagine, this is a huge accomplishment. It is a true testament to the staff we have that works here everyday in the corrections environment. You may get tired of hearing this, but I cannot stress enough how blessed I am as the Sheriff of Van Buren County to work in such a supportive county and work with such a great staff in all our divisions.
  • Uniform Response handled a Fatal Traffic Crash in Antwerp Township. The driver was a 60-year-old Mattawan Man. It was a single vehicle crash into a tree.
