Nature of Incident: Private Property UTV Crash

Investigating and Assisting Agencies: Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office, Lawrence Fire Department, Van Buren EMS
Narrative: Sheriff Daniel E Abbott reports that Deputies responded to the above location for a UTV crash on private property. The callers stated that a 5-year-old boy was trapped under the vehicle. Deputy Felix Torres responded immediately to the scene where he was met by several family members. Deputy Torres and several others lifted the UTV off of the child and began medical assessment. The child was breathing, responsive but had several injuries. The crash occurred well off the roadway, the child was taken to the ambulance by a separate UTV, due to the location. The child was transported to the hospital via ambulance. It is believed that the quick actions by Deputy Torres and bystanders to remove the UTV prevented further serious injury. The child sustained minor injuries and was released from the hospital to family.
