Sheriff Notes September 18 2023

  • We recently sent more people for training for our CISM Team (Critical Incident Stress Management).  It is a team our office has made up of several different individuals with different backgrounds and not everyone on it works at the Sheriff’s Office. When a tragic incident happens that Police, Fire, or EMS handle and need to debrief about it, our CISM Team gets involved. It has made a big difference and impact since putting it in place.
  • Uniform Response handled a larceny and break-in south of Hartford in which a camper and mower was taken.  Working in conjunction with Cass County Sheriff's Office, the items were recovered in Cass County along with other items. The subjects were lodged for the incident.
  • Our office was able to work in conjunction with the ISD Fire/EMS Director as well as the ISD Superintendent with a vehicle we were taking out of service. The transition of an old ambulance was finalized with the BOC last week.  With that, the students will now have another ambulance to train with. The vehicle was originally donated to our office by Covert Township and used with our Dive Team. The Dive Team now has an updated vehicle they use so the ambulance was taken out of service. I set on the Criminal Justice Advisory Board for the ISD and know that items are needed to help train our upcoming youth in these fields. With that, that is why I wanted to see the used ambulance put to good use in our community.
  • Multiple members of our office assisted in the search for the missing plane and pilot from the Dowagiac Airport. Several citizens also joined in with our office and within the search area. While the search was still taking place in certain areas of our county, the missing plane and pilot was located in Cass County. I’d like to thank everyone involved for all their efforts. Unfortunately, it was not the end result we were hoping for.
  • Our Narcotic Team has been working on a suspected drug trafficker from the South Haven Area. They were able to get a traffic stop on him during their surveillance. Based on information and PC, the vehicle was impounded. Our Canine Kuno was called in and a free air search was done on the vehicle. Canine Kuno did alert on the vehicle for the presence of narcotics. With that, a search warrant was drawn up. Detectives did find a magnetic storage container on the bottom of the vehicle. Detectives located 21 fentanyl pills that were disguised as OxyContin. Cocaine was also located in the box. Inside the trunk, Detectives located a Glock handgun and an extended magazine for it.
  • Uniform Response took a UDAA of a 2005 burgundy F150 Ford truck. The vehicle was parked after overheating and when the owners returned to get it, it was gone. Anyone with information on this is asked to call our office.
  • Uniform Response took an alarm south of Lawton in Porter Township at the Mega Liquor and Smoke store. It was found during the investigation that two subjects broke in and stole approximately $3,000.00 worth of merchandise. During the investigation, it was also found that the same two had stolen approximately $2,300.00 worth of merchandise 10 days earlier.  The deputies were able to identify the two suspects from evidence at the scene as well as assistance from the public. The suspects were located and lodged at our facility. They are also linked to a break in in Cass County for another store.
