Sheriff Notes August 21 2023

  • Uniform Response took a Breaking and Entering in progress in Waverly Township in which an alert came into the storage building owner.  A newer model white GMC Pickup was involved in the incident.  Another vehicle was involved as well and was recovered at the scene by our office.  All the suspects were gone leaving just prior to the Deputies arrival.  All 3 suspects were described as white males in their 30’s and the driver of the GMC had tattoos on his left arm.  Several items were stollen during the incident.   A day prior to this incident in the same area, two Amazon packages were stollen off a porch of a residence.  The vehicle was described as the same as above.  Anyone with any information is asked to call our office.
  • Detectives and School Resource Deputies from the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office recently attended 16 hours of training in Berrien Springs, Michigan, on Identify and Intercepting School Violence.  Deputies were provided valuable information and tools on how to identify, investigate, prevent, and prosecute such crimes.  Currently, the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office has uniformed school resource deputies in Paw Paw, Mattawan, Hartford, Gobles, and Bloomingdale School districts who provide not only security for their students and staff but also law-related counseling and education and as a resource for school and community issues. I would tell or ask everyone, if you see or hear something that threatens a student or school safety, call our office or submit a confidential tip to OK2SAY.  Anyone can report confidential tips on criminal activities or potential harm directed at students, school employees, or schools.  Tips can be submitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Our office participated in an Active Shooter Table Top at the ISD put on by the ISD.  We consistently train on numerous things we may have to deal with, and this table top was just another example of that.
  • All of our patrol units are equipped with active shooter gear.  It consists of a ballistic shield, ballistic helmet, as well as other items.  It is all our hope that this equipment will never have to be used.
  • We are in the final stages of another contract with a township.  Once in place, we will be contracting a dedicated 5 hours a week in Decatur Township.  By doing so, it’s like all of our other townships we contract with.  The assigned deputy will address what the township board needs addressed as well as what they normally do on their work day.  That deputy is solely  dedicated to the township unless a priority call comes in that they would need to leave the township for.
  • Just a friendly reminder that schools are starting back up, so keep that in mind in your travels.  Every year we ticket people for running school bus lights and putting kids’ lives in danger for absolutely no reason.
