Sheriff Notes August 2nd 2023

  • Uniform Response responded Sunday to a drowning in a irrigation/retention pond.  Four subjects got into a boat that had holes in it, and it took on water very fast.  They all bailed out as it was sinking, however, one of the occupants could not swim.  The victim was found very quickly once a Van Buren County Dive Team member got on scene.  Sheriff Abbott was also on scene and was able to assist the first diver on scene with the tether, rope operation, etc. due to having 18 years’ experience on the Dive Team.   Within approximately 5 minutes with the diver in the water, the victim was located.  Life saving measures were attempted, but the 25-year-old male from Mexico was unable to be revived.  I would like to thank all the first responders to the incident for all their help and efforts in this call.
  • Uniform Response responded to a domestic disturbance in Columbia Township.  It was found that a male subject had poured gas throughout the residence and was threatening to light the house, himself, and significant other on fire. He was lodged on the incident.
  • Uniform Response took a call reference an 85-year-old female that went missing.  She was located safe and sound in Ottawa County shortly after taking the call.  MSP EMA was utilized in getting her information to the press rapidly as possible along with our Listserv.  She was located approximately 2 hours after the news release went live.  Great work by all with a great ending.
  • Uniform Response handled a call in Hamilton Township on a domestic situation.  The 24-year-old suspect was lodged for the incident.  He was charged with assault with the intent to do great bodily harm less than murder or by strangulation, weapons-felony firearm, weapons-firearms-possession by a felon, weapons-felony firearm, weapons-carrying concealed, assault with a dangerous weapon-felonious assault, domestic violence, and malicious destruction of personal property less than $200. 
  • Our office will be once again as we do every year participating in the OHSP Grant coming up.  Extra patrols are put on and reimbursed through the grant to target intoxicated drivers as well as other violations.
  • Those are just some of the highlighted major calls the Uniform Response handled this week.  Our staff stays very busy not only reactive, but proactive to keep Van Buren County a safe place to live.  Our office is very fortune to have so much support, so thank you to the Van Buren County Community for that.
