Sheriff Notes July 21 2023

  • 911 Dispatch highlights the following 2 applications:
  1. what3words = is a geocode mapping application that is free to download.  “what3 words” has mapped the surface of the earth and assigned 3 unique words to each 3-meter square that do not change.  911 can pinpoint a location when the 3 unique words are shared / given to them either by voice or text.  Illustration:  You are lost in the woods, or on a body of water, you would use the app to find your 3 unique words and relay them to 911.  Mapping interfaces in the 911 center are then utilized to verify location.  Additional information including minimum platforms & devices that support the app may be found at what3words.com
  2. Smart911 – is a smart profile that may provide 911 with additional information such as vehicles, pets, medical information, location of utilities at your home etc.  A mobile application is also available for download to your smartphone from either Google Play or the Apple App Store.  A consumer may provide as much as possible or just the minimum in their safety profile.  The profile is only available to the 911 Center during the course of a 911 triggered event.  Smart911 is free to the citizen.  Additional information may be found at smart911.com.
  • Our Office has increased patrols in work areas with the Van Buren County Road Commission.   The Road Commission sends us the areas they will be working in so our Uniform Response can patrol the area.
  • A reminder that we participate in a free gun lock giveaway to the community.  If you need one, we disperse them from our lobby clerk during business hours.
  • We have a drop off in our lobby area for worn flags
  • Our Investigative Unit was able to work with another Sheriff’s Office in recovering several stolen items from a break in taken by our office earlier in the week.  Great team work by all.
  • We are partners with the Red Med Boxes throughout the county.  Just a reminder that if you have any unused meds, don’t flush them.  You can take them to one of our many locations and put them in the Red Med Box at no cost.  The locations are on our web site Here
